When people ask me what my ethnicity is, I tell them that I'm Jamaican (along with African American), but I have never once claimed to be Jamaican as far as a strong cultural identity goes. This, however, does not matter to this episode's guest, Codi Ann Reid, who has objected to any type of Jamaican association on my part since we shared the halls of Harvard's Adams House. Heritage and identity center much of our conversation, while we also explore ideas of liminality, emotional suppression, and others that have shaped our senses of self.

I'm joined by a returning guest, entrepreneur and creator Jordan Berakah, who has undergone a serious spiritual awakening since his last appearance on the pod. In this conversation we talk about his belief that the chosen people referenced in the Bible are actually the Bantu people and why it seems that expressing such belief is so taboo.

At this point let's just set the expectation that I do an episode revolving around love and relationships every year for Valentine's Day. I tend to stay away from dating discourse because I feel like it's often overdone and bastardized for the sake of entertainment value. I do, however, think that it is a topic of significance, so this is my attempt to add some insight to the conversation in the interest of personal and collective improvement.

One of my favorite parts of hosting this podcast is that I'm able to speak with people who are doing just that and get real insight into what it takes to make it happen. In my first episode of 2024, I'm joined by Kalala Kiwanuka-Woernle to discuss the work and challenges behind becoming a professional actor. I'm particularly fond of this conversation because Kalala and I actually grew up in the same church, so it's wonderful to hear about how she's been carving out a lane for herself in the entertainment industry.

I often talk about my belief that we are all individually obligated to contribute positively society, but I recently stepped out of a period of my life in which I was making intentional efforts to limit my active political and social engagement to a certain degree. The goal of this was to "protect my peace;" I often felt like trying to make the world a better place was a futile pursuit that only lead to disappointment, but that nagging sense of obligation persisted. With the violent conflict between Israel and Palestine taking center stage in the global media over the last 7 weeks as well as developments in my own personal life, I've been reminded of my convictions in regards to social responsibility and compelled to speak on them.
Today's conversation includes my thoughts on Israel-Palestine and its implications on US foreign policy, American individualism's effect on our culture of community, responsible media consumption & more.
